Socializing
Whatever you’re into, we’ve got it. Well, pretty much at least. And we can almost guarantee you can find someone to do it with.

Here we are at the end of the semester - the end of the last semester for some. 4 years have come and gone and now we must move on into the next part of our lives. As the end approaches, I start thinking about the beginning. Freshman year, I had no idea what was happening with anything. I would just go where my friends went. (I was a shy freshman) Slowly over the years, I became involved in things that my close friends were not involved in. Now I am doing all sorts of things with new people and have no problem with doing them. I became a member of a lot of different clubs, president of some clubs, worked phone-a-thons, worked in the admissions office, joined the tennis team for a while (I wasn’t any good though), coached some swimming for the town team, and student taught at BHS. I think I have come a long way from the lost, shy freshman that I started off being and most seniors here at Lyon will tell you the same thing about themselves. You really grow during your college years - especially here at Lyon. There are so many different things for what ever you are interested in and so many different ways to become a leader.
Although I’ve made it through almost 3 years of college without a TV in my room, I finally folded and bought a TV over Christmas break. I have a pretty short attention span so I usually just flip through the channels looking for commercials. A few nights ago, I saw the AT&T commercial which shows a grandma, mom, and 2 daughters (I think) playing Scrabble. They don’t put down typical phrases but play tiles that spell out texting lingo, like ROTFL and things like that. And the whole time that the girls are playing, they are all (except for the mom) texting on their cell phones.
Don’t you love it when you get to see friends that you haven’t in a while? I have a lot of friends that graduated last year that I miss SO much! That’s a hard thing to deal with about college…but when you get to see them again, it’s so great!
This week is recruitment (also known as “rush” at other schools) week for the Greek women’s organizations. This means that we have three parties on school nights and then by the end of the week there are new members in each organization. I’m having a lot of fun helping out my sorority so far. Tonight is the party that everyone always remembers, and it is going to be super. I’m very excited about all the girls that are going through and cannot wait to see who joins us. Since all this takes place during everything else “normal” going on like class and such, I’m beginning to get a little frenzied. But I think I’ll be able to catch up on sleep and homework. Greek life is so fun on this campus, in spite of its small stature! I hope everyone gets what they want this week…Ciao!
When the whole Facebook epidemic hit a few years ago, everyone warned me that if I got it, I’d be addicted. I’m sad to say that they were right. Yet, the creators of Facebook just couldn’t leave good enough alone; they had to make it “better”. First came the Mini-Feed, which created tons of controversy as it showed practically every detail about changes made to “friends” pages, displayed wall-to-walls, etc. And now, there are all of these crazy applications that can be added to your profile page. When I go to look at a friend’s wall, I have to scroll down for practically two minutes because of all the applications they’ve added to their page. Some of the applications are fun…..the SuperPoke!, Graffiti Wall, Greek Family Tree….and others just seem a little strange. I keep getting invitations to add the Zombie and Vampire Slayer apps….to me, that qualifies as strange. But hey, maybe I’m completely alone in these opinions…comments, anyone?
Well, we’re now about a week into classes, and things have started to get into a groove. Freshman have had the luxury of being moved in by upperclassmen, and gone then been through the un-luxury of the orientation process. Later it is the fun of memorizing your new schedule and finding new classrooms for the first time. At the same time, there is the getting aquainted with the roommate process, and building your raft with your mentor group for the raft race that just took place on Monday. It’s a lot to handle for the first week.
Alright who’s seen Animal House? Okay not really exactly how it really is, but real life does have it’s own characters as well. Really fraternity life isn’t about all the partying that you see on TV shows and movies. I’m not gonna lie and say that we don’t provide some social life for Lyon, but I wanted to let you know about some of the other qualities there are to being in a fraternity or Greek for that matter.
Batesville may seem small. We’ve got restaurants, a movie theater, and a bowling alley. But trust me, there’s still plenty of stuff to do here on the weekends. The Student Activities Council, known as SAC, sponsors some sort of activity every weekend. Also, there’s always some type of sporting event taking place; you can count on basketball in the fall and baseball in the spring! And Greek life is definitely not lacking in vitality on campus, as the fraternities always have something planned!
Joining a fraternity or sorority is an excellent way to become involved in campus life at Lyon. At first, I was a bit apprehensive about joining in the Greek life on campus, but now I can’t imagine the college experience without it.
As a member of the Epsilon Rho chapter of Phi Mu, I have developed friendships with my sisters that will last a lifetime. We participate in various projects, fundraisers, and fun events, all of which foster in developing leadership and people skills among members.
It’s already that time of year again and the bagpipes are warming up. All the festivities are about to take place in two weeks on April 20-22 and include plenty of Scottish heritage from bagpipes and dancing along with lots a food and people. It’s a time when plenty of organizations are out offering diffenrent arts and foods for fundraisers and just a time when alums and students are all out. The attractions don’t end at the close of the Fest in the afternoon though. There’s a concert on Saturday night with a party following hosted by the Kappa Sigma’s, which always attracts plenty of students and this time with some alums as well. It should all be a good time for all and is always a mark for the end of the semester coming (can’t wait!).
