And So It Begins…

Well, we’re now about a week into classes, and things have started to get into a groove.  Freshman have had the luxury of being moved in by upperclassmen,  and gone then been through the un-luxury of the orientation process.  Later it is the fun of memorizing your new schedule and finding new classrooms for the first time.  At the same time, there is the getting aquainted with the roommate process, and building your raft with your mentor group for the raft race that just took place on Monday. It’s a lot to handle for the first week.

A Conference…about Worms??

During my summer of research on C. elgans, our lab attended the 16th International C. elegans Meeting held on the campus of UCLA.  I know it may be hard to believe, but 1,600 people came to this conference to share their research and observations about one tiny nematode.  Let me tell you, these people were serious about worms.  No matter where you went, there was always a group of people engaged in a conversation about C. elegans

Backpacking 101

Yep so I’m back from trip #2 for the summer.  This time was backpacking in the Rockies out in New Mexico.  I was an Eagle Scout back in the day so when one of the advisors for a trek out to Philmont got hurt, I got an invite and jumped at the chance to be an advisor and the chance to go again.

Vacation’s Over….Back to Reality!

Well, I just spent the past week lying on a sandy beach, soaking up that warm Florida sunshine, so it was extremely hard to come back to Batesville and begin work this week.  For as long as I can remember, I’ve always found something to occupy my summer break, whether it was babysitting, mowing yards, being our “housekeeper” (and getting paid for it), or working at a pharmacy.  But this summer, I’m trying something a little different; I was given the opportunity to do research in Dr. Lindblom’s lab.  The first few days of work have been tedious and trying at times, but I guess that’s to be expected at the beginning.  Thankfully, I have an extremely patient lab partner who’s teaching me the ropes!

Today I had the priveledge of performing a “key audit” for all the dorm rooms, which is part of my responsibilities as a summer RA.  Basically, once I organized the keys, I had to try every key in every lock to make sure that they actually worked.  Sounds like fun, huh?  Really, it was kind of a pain in the butt, but it’s something that has to be done!  I think I’ve gained a new appreciation for keys….

Life in a Frat House

Alright who’s seen Animal House? Okay not really exactly how it really is, but real life does have it’s own characters as well. Really fraternity life isn’t about all the partying that you see on TV shows and movies. I’m not gonna lie and say that we don’t provide some social life for Lyon, but I wanted to let you know about some of the other qualities there are to being in a fraternity or Greek for that matter.

Travel anyone…maybe study abroad?

I guess, I would if I had to go to the Bahamas and chill for two weeks and earn some credit hours for it, lol. Seriously though, the Nichols Program is a great way to get out and see the world. We’re not talking about joining the Navy either. Each year, several professors sponsor a trip through an endowed program known as Nichols. A couple on slate for this year are a trip to the Bahamas to sail throughout many of the islands and study marine biology or go to Greece to study the culture both modern and ancient. Of course it’s a summer trip so it’s not all business. There’s plenty of time to relax and check out the awesome scenery or work on the tan (if you’re into that sorta thing). The great thing is that you don’t have to spend thousands of dollars doing it. The programs are really affordable due to the endowment. It can also go towards you studying abroad in places like Spain, France, or England to name a few if you’re interested in actually leaving town for a semester. Lyon has deals worked out with several sister institutions around the world so you can experience a different culture for long term. Either way, you can expect to have an amazing experience you may not get to have anywhere else.

An evening of Baseball

I’m not gonna lie, there’s some nights where studying is just out of the question. I’ve got a couple tests coming up, but I decided I was going to break the cardinal rule and study the night before because baseball is on TV.

Brenda’s Bake Shop

College students on just about every campus everywhere seem to complain about the quality of cafeteria food.  But here, one thing is for sure: Mom’s desserts cannot even compare to those that Brenda makes in the cafeteria!  Words can’t begin to describe the wonderful desserts that fill ‘Brenda’s Bake Shop’–cookies, brownies, pies, cheesecake–you name it, and Brenda can probably make it.  Campus favorites include rice crispie treats, homemade apple pie, cheesecake topped with cherry or strawberry sauce, and the world’s most delicious sugar cookies.  Oh, how could we forget about the ever-so-popular Brownie Bar days?  And, if all this delicious dessert talk has made you think about those the dreaded “Freshman 15″, don’t worry–we have a fitness center!

The Fountain of…Bubbles

There’s just something about fountains that brings out the mischeevious side of college students.  Maybe it comes from our childhood fascination with bubble baths–perhaps that could make a good case for a child psychologist.  Regardless of the source of motivation, putting soap into the fountain located by the Mabee Simpson Library seems to be an all-too-typical prank for students.  Maintenance probably gets tired of dealing with this bubble-spouting fountain, but at least it adds a little bit of excitement on walks to the dreaded 8 o’clock classes.
