A Summer Away from Home
At the beginning of May, it seems like we can’t get away from school soon enough. But after a few weeks back at home with the parents, we’re left with a longing for Lyon…we don’t miss the classes but miss the people and sense of independence that we’ve grown accustomed to.
This summer I’ve found a pretty simple solution to this problem. As I mentioned in previous posts, I’m working in a research lab. I not only get a paycheck every few weeks, but also have an allowance for summer housing, so I don’t pay a penny for my apartment! And actually, there is a ton of job opportunities on campus during the summer; Lyon’s a pretty busy place during the summer months! A whole bunch of high school kids are involved in the Apple Program and UBMS, so some of my friends are working as tutor-counselors for those programs. And of course, lots of research positions are available in the science departments. Oh, and Lyon hires Summer RAs too. I’m a “Camps and Conferences” Summer RA, so I get to work with all the camps that come through here, and I absolutely love it!
Although you may be thinking that Batesville is the last place that you want to spend summer break, maybe you should think again. All of the jobs mentioned above pay for on-campus housing, so no part of your paycheck gets eaten up by apartment rent and utility bills. It also lets you avoid all those arguments with the parents if you were at home…..
