Working in the Office
Wow, summer went and got really busy really fast. After getting back from the Bahamas at the end of May (post coming soon about that), I’ve had to get into the full swing of 9-5 office work. Yeah not quite as good as sailing in the office, but it’s been really interesting all the same.
I have gotten the chance to work in an otolaryngology clinic (fancy name for ear, nose and throat specialist) all summer long and see what work in a large practice is like. Starting out, I was just following around some of the doctors seeing their different styles of communicating with the patients and diagnosis process. Then, they wanted me to start taking patients back and getting histories on the patients, which was suprisingly difficult at first, but you get the hang of what questions to ask for certain health complaints. I’ve been challenged all along however I still haven’t felt I’ve run into anything that I didn’t understand though.
A lot of the stuff I’ve seen whether it be disease processes or just basic anatomy I’ve already had a good background on from the classes I’ve been able to take in the Biology department. It’s great to know that at least some of those classes that we take and are a pain at the time actually come in handy somewhere down the road. Anyway, I would definately suggest this to anyone planning on taking the pre-med track whenever you come to Lyon, and really just anything that you plan on studying at college is good to research before you get to school. It might really narrow down what you end up taking at Lyon.
That’s all I have for now, but hope everyone is having a great summer so far. Later.
