Lyon College Blog

Welcome to our blog

So here you are. And here we are. With everything you ever wanted to know about college, and then some. So whatever it is you’re curious about (school-related, please) ask away. Or search for it. Because here, you’ll hear it all first-hand from a group of us just living the dream. Welcome.

Greek Life

Joining a fraternity or sorority is an excellent way to become involved in campus life at Lyon. At first, I was a bit apprehensive about joining in the Greek life on campus, but now I can’t imagine the college experience without it.
As a member of the Epsilon Rho chapter of Phi Mu, I have developed friendships with my sisters that will last a lifetime. We participate in various projects, fundraisers, and fun events, all of which foster in developing leadership and people skills among members.

Baseball

As the end of the semester nears, the “To Do” list seems to get longer and longer. There are papers to write, presentations to prepare, and final exams lurk in the future. However, sometimes in the midst of all the craziness of college life, it is nice to set aside time to enjoy the small things that college life has to offer.

Fred: The Ghost of Spragins Hall

Chances are, sooner or later, you’ll hear rumors of Fred, the ghost of Spragins Hall. I really don’t know when the story of Fred began or if there is even a grain of truth to the tale, but I still find it rather amusing. Apparently Fred haunts a few selected rooms in Spragins. He’s been known to leave messages on computers and randomly turn TVs on and off. Fred is probably best known for the ‘protective’ watch that he keeps over the girls in Spragins Hall. He is not fond of pictures or posters of other guys that college girls often have plastered about their dorm room. Most residents find it difficult to get these items to remain hanging on the walls because Fred becomes jealous and knocks them down. Since I’ve never actually lived in Spragins, my knowledge of Fred is limited to hearsay around campus. I’m sure past and present residents can tell even better tales than this. But still, it gets you thinking….is this just another crazy college ghost story?? Guess you’ll just have to find out for yourself!

Student Government Association

Concerned about the cafeteria food, campus safety, or the Honor or Social Code? The Student Government Association at Lyon has got it covered. Essentially, SGA represents the voice of the students. Bi-monthly meetings are held with the Student Body President, class representatives, dorm representatives, and faculty advisors. A majority of SGA’s work is accomplished through committees, in which members work to address various issues and communicate ideas and concerns of students to the administration.

Professional Experiences through Lyon

As if the spring semester wasn’t crazy enough, there is always that question of finding that summer job. It’s a little different as well when we get to college because there is a career to keep in mind for the long run. Rather than what might first come to mind as a summer job like the grocery store or a retail job at the mall, there is a need for professional experience to consider. Whether it be working in a research lab or doctor’s office for science majors or as an intern for big corporations like Axciom, internships are where it’s at for resume building. Luckily for us students, the Career Development Center is just a short walk to the Lyon Building. Here the staff has all the latest opening for any type of internship that you can want. I’ve done biology research with some of the faculty here at Lyon, but there is also positions available at UAMS. I’ve also gotten to branch out a bit as well with doing anouncing for the radio station here in town covering the Scots and Pipers basketball games. However, the openings are almost limitless and you can spend hours going over the opportunities available. That’s where the staff at the CDC come in and help. So, next time you’re looking for a summer job while here at Lyon, consider taking a job somewhere better than the burger joint down the road and add a great reference onto the resume at the same time.

Myths at Lyon College

I’m not sure that Lyon is haunted, but it definately has its “places of interest”. There’s always the stories of the Chapel. There’s stories of the child ghosts around the steeple because of the weird shadows around it at night, but some students could tell you they’ve been up there and the only thing up there is a great view. There’s also the odd noises that you might sometimes hear in the Derby Center at 1am, but that could just be too much studying or the vents playing tricks on you (definately been there before). Who knows about the unknown gravestone on the cross country course but rumor has it that it belongs to a boy named “Tommy”, and there’s always a debate on how many bells are in the tower, which some claim to be eye witnesses. Of course access to some of these spots are restricted, so investigate at your own risk!

Scottish Fest Approaching

It’s already that time of year again and the bagpipes are warming up. All the festivities are about to take place in two weeks on April 20-22 and include plenty of Scottish heritage from bagpipes and dancing along with lots a food and people. It’s a time when plenty of organizations are out offering diffenrent arts and foods for fundraisers and just a time when alums and students are all out. The attractions don’t end at the close of the Fest in the afternoon though. There’s a concert on Saturday night with a party following hosted by the Kappa Sigma’s, which always attracts plenty of students and this time with some alums as well. It should all be a good time for all and is always a mark for the end of the semester coming (can’t wait!).

Class Registration for the Fall

Whew! Class scheduling can be stressful this time of year with finals just around the corner, but it’s definately made a lot easier having an advisor who knows you really well and is almost always available for a chat. That’s really the great thing about our professors is that they are almost always available and always happy to sit down for a conversation and not just about acedemics but whatever. Anyway, needless to say, class signup went well, and it was definately nice signing up for 14 hours for this next semester after 3 years of heavy courseloads with lots of labs. Nice to know all that hard work actually did pay off for a smooth senior year!

First Week on Campus

It’s been a little while since my first week here on campus, but I was just thinking about how it was one of the best weeks that I’ve had here at Lyon. It definately had its dull points with all the orientations that are required, but you do get some useful information out of the sessions. The great thing though was meeting all the new people. The quad is a great place to go outside and hang out with all your new classmates because it’s kinda the central spot between all the freshman dorms. Also, if you want to meet some of the upperclassmen, the apartments are just around the corner, and house many juniors seniors and some sophmores. Along with them are the Greek organizations who are always ready to meet the new freshmen. Along with all the new people you’ll meet are the new responsibilities that you might not have had before with being on your own and everything that includes: no one to make sure you get up, a roommate, and…laundry (not that bad after your first time). Definately though, stay your first weekend and be sure to get out and meet new people. It’s the best way to get over any homesickness you might have and really just make your first week here a lot more fun.

Outdoor Possibilities at and Around Lyon

When it comes to the outdoors, you have plenty to choose from around Lyon and within 45 minutes. Whether your interest is Ultimate Frisbee or Frisbee golf, a hike, a thrilling ascent of Jamestown Crag, or an amazing ride around the Syllamo area, you’ll have your fill of all. The outdoor group here on campus, XAS (Xtreme Adventure Squad), is very active starting with their weekly Ultimate games on Sunday afternoons. There’s also the campouts
