Lyon College Blog

Welcome to our blog

So here you are. And here we are. With everything you ever wanted to know about college, and then some. So whatever it is you’re curious about (school-related, please) ask away. Or search for it. Because here, you’ll hear it all first-hand from a group of us just living the dream. Welcome.

The End

Here we are at the end of the semester - the end of the last semester for some.  4 years have come and gone and now we must move on into the next part of our lives.  As the end approaches, I start thinking about the beginning.  Freshman year, I had no idea what was happening with anything.  I would just go where my friends went. (I was a shy freshman)  Slowly over the years, I became involved in things that my close friends were not involved in.  Now I am doing all sorts of things with new people and have no problem with doing them.  I became a member of a lot of different clubs, president of some clubs, worked phone-a-thons, worked in the admissions office, joined the tennis team for a while (I wasn’t any good though), coached some swimming for the town team, and student taught at BHS.  I think I have come a long way from the lost, shy freshman that I started off being and most seniors here at Lyon will tell you the same thing about themselves.  You really grow during your college years - especially here at Lyon.  There are so many different things for what ever you are interested in and so many different ways to become a leader.

Affordable to Drive?

I drive a 1997 Land Rover Discovery. While it is an awesome vehicle and really fun for off-roading, the price it takes to fill up at the pump these days really hurts! The last time I filled up my 21 gallon tank, it cost $71.00! I’m not the best at math, but I certainly know that if I had to fill up regularly, I would not be able to afford it.

Student Government Association

At the beginning of fall semester, and near the end of spring semester, some very important things happen with the SGA. Elections! During this time, the secretary of SGA oversees the administration of these elections. This is quite a busy time, but it is so rewarding when all is said and done!

Anticipation

The last few days before Spring Break are the hardest for me to focus. Before this Spring Break can start for me, I have one more test, two papers to work on (one is to finish), a couple of meetings, and one last night at my job for the week. I am anxious about how I will perform academically, and I’m a little worried that I won’t get it all done.

IDK about all this texting…

Although I’ve made it through almost 3 years of college without a TV in my room, I finally folded and bought a TV over Christmas break.   I have a pretty short attention span so I usually just flip through the channels looking for commercials.  A few nights ago, I saw the AT&T commercial which shows a grandma, mom, and 2 daughters (I think) playing Scrabble.   They don’t put down typical phrases but play tiles that spell out texting lingo, like ROTFL and things like that.  And the whole time that the girls are playing, they are all (except for the mom) texting on their cell phones.

Spring Fever

Okay, I have officially been hit with spring fever.  This weekend was so beautiful.  Some friends and I went to the river yesterday and had a picnic and worked on some homework outside.  It was so nice to be outside and not freeze.  The wind was a little annoying but overall it was worth it. (we also played on some of the playground equipment but shhh-don’t tell anyone)  Today is a great day as well.  Beautiful days make my mood SO much better.  But with spring fever comes a worse case of senoritis.  It has been hard to get anything done this weekend but I’m trying my hardest.

Reunited and it Feels so Good!

Don’t you love it when you get to see friends that you haven’t in a while? I have a lot of friends that graduated last year that I miss SO much! That’s a hard thing to deal with about college…but when you get to see them again, it’s so great!

Procrastination, Anyone?

No, not me! I’m a very studious Lyon student. (Trust me, my GPA shows it…sometimes)

Let me tell you…I love to read! I cannot count how many books I’ve read in my lifetime. However, for some reason I have to fight with myself internally every time I have to read for a class. Assigned reading just turns me off completely. It’s like if I see a book on a shelf in a store, it would be very interesting to read. But when I have to pay hundreds of dollars for used books that are going to determine grades…I’m completely disinterested.

The Dreaded St. Valentine

It’s over! Valentine’s Day officially ended about 30 minutes ago. While some people may hate this very commercialized holiday, I particularly enjoyed it this year. See, I wasn’t expecting much at all. I had to work tonight, and my boyfriend and I decided a few weeks ago to forgo gift exchange. But after work, I was delighted to learn that my boyfriend not only wanted to take me out to dinner, he also wanted to go see a new movie! This was definitely a treat. We get so busy with school and all that most of the time we just end up hanging around campus and not going on a “real date.”

Random Thoughts

So it is officially my last semester at Lyon College.  While I am not 100 % sure I want to leave everyone I’ve meet here behind, I am ready for a change.  The biggest change that I want to happen is living somewhere besides a dorm.  Dorms serve their purpose but they get a little old after a while.  I’ve figured out that the trick is to stay out of them for as long as possible.  Spend all your time elsewhere.  Another change that I am looking foward to is having my own parking space.  The parking area for Young House leaves something to be desired.  If you get lucky you can get a spot in the lower lot which isn’t far from the dorms but the not so lucky have to park in what is called the Way-Out-There Lot (also known as the WOT Lot).  I am ready for my own parking spot that is close to my house/apartment/wherever I live.  I am ready for a house but I don’t have the money for a house.  I am going to grad school next year so I doubt the whole house thing will happen anytime soon anyways…
